Zambia Holidays and Walking Safaris

World Big Cat Safaris are specialists in safaris to Zambia by vehicle, or for the more adventurous, on foot on one of the fabulous walking safaris that are possible in the South Luangwa Valley!

Zambia is a landlocked country lying between Tanzania, DRC, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Angola. Still a developing wildlife safari destination Zambia is in the unique position of having some stunning wildlife viewing and yet compared to other African safari destinations it is relatively uncrowded. The recent tourism development also means that Zambia is in the unique position of being able to tailor its development around the positive aspects of other safari destinations at the same time as ommitting the less desirable elemnts of the more developed destinations.

Altitudes throughout Zambia range between 1,000 - 1,600m and are incised by the valleys of the Zambezi, Kafue and Luangwa Rivers. In general this means that Zambia often has a temperate climate with temperatures throughout the year ranging from 20 - 31 degrees celsius. May through to October are the principal months for wildlife safaris with temperatures increasing as you move into September and October.

Vegetation comprises primarily of Miombo woodland which consists of grasslands, sporadic trees and shrubs interspersed by beautiful ebony groves. This ecosystem is home to the majority of the large predators including lion and leopard with cheetah sightings being far less frequent and focused primarily to the more open plains of Busanga in Kafue National Park. Bird species also do well in Zambia with over 750 species in total as specis range from both the Southern African and East African ranges.

What to Expect: Zambia is possibly one of the most welcoming countries in Africa; wherever you go people introduce themselves out of curiosity and it leaves the traveller feeling a sense of well being and comfort. Easy to travel round with a combination of air and road transfers Zambia is home to some of the most accessible wildlife in Africa. As with other African destinations however please bear in mind that on occasions transfers and service levels etc may not be up to western standards and it is essential that the traveller is patient and enjoys this as part of the experience and adventure of visiting Africa.
