Sri Lanka Family Holidays

Handcrafted family holidays to enjoy the wildlife, culture and beaches of exotic Sri Lanka...

Relatively small compared to neighbouring India, Sri Lanka manages to pack a whole lot in; from fascinating wildlife and pristine beaches to historic architecture and friendly locals. Offering a family holiday with a difference, rideSri Lankan Coastline elephants bareback, explore jungles on a jeep safari, discover Hindu temples and find your way to hill top forts. Sri Lanka never fails to enchant its visitors, and you will leave fulfilled with having explored a truly magical destination...

With so much to see and do, it seems fitting to stay there for years, not weeks and your young ones and teens won’t want to leave. When it comes to wildlife, there is a huge variety; visit the orphaned elephants at Pinnawela, then head to Uda Walawe National Park to see them in the wild, bump around in a 4x4 through Yala National Park where you might see monkeys, elephants and, if you’re lucky, leopards; or relax at Thalpe beach where turtles bob around breaking the glistening surf. You can even watch out for dolphins and humpback whales and blue whales along the spectacular coastlines.

The locals are friendly and always happy to get families involved, whether it’s bartering at local markets, teaching you about the local traditions and religion or inviting you to join in with the early morning fish haul. Your guide will help you divide your time between the wildlife, culture and history of Sri Lanka, and when it comes to history, there is plenty to enchant visitors. Explore crumbling forts where ancient art still adorns the walls, city ruins and spectacular architecture, taste traditional recipes and watch out for Giant Buddha’s and the orange robes of Monks.

For those with teens or adventurous youngsters, try your hand at a spot of whitewater rafting to get the adrenaline flowing, or head to a tea plantation for some adventure and the best cup of tea you have ever tasted.

There is plenty of Sri Lankan accommodation for families, from The Wallawwa – a secret getaway with expansive gardens, a pool and spa as well as specialised children’s menu, and the luxurious Aditya, close to the historic city of Galle on a hidden stretch of private beach. Camping is available too if you are looking for something a little more wild and rural. Kulu Safaris offer mobile tented camping, stopping at the best spots throughout Uda Wallawe, Wilipattu and Yala National Parks for a more intimate and personal Sri Lankan safari experience, always trying to camp near water sources to increase wildlife sightings! Sleeping up to just 8 people, tents are well equipped and a night under canvas in the jungle is enough to spark a childlike sense of adventure in a person of any age.

Sri Lanka is a magical place and certain to create memories that will last a lifetime, from the tea plantations and jungles to palm fringed coastlines. Much of the islands area consists of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so there is huge emphasis on conserving this amazing country. Perfect for families of all sizes and ages, there is something to do for everyone, on top of all that it is reasonably priced.
