A Family Kenya Migration Safari

A Family Safari to Explore the Big Game of the African Plains in the Famous Kenyan Masai Mara - From £3,900 Per Person (Excluding International Flights - Based on a Family of 4)

Day 1
On arrival into Jomo Kenyatta Airport you will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to Wilson for your flight to the Mara. On arrival into the Mara you will be met and transferred to Rekero.

Rekero is an intimate camp with a personal service and is owned and run by people who are extremely passionate about what they do. This seasonal Camp, set up between the months of June and March, provides some first class game viewing during that time period. Owned and run by Gerard Beaton and Jackson of Big Cat Diary fame, the Camp is renowned for its rustic charm, first class service and unbeatable guiding. Professional Masai guides accompany you on your safari around this fantastic area of the Mara, which is great for both viewing of the annual wildebeest migration, as well as spotting the big cats.
Overnight: Rekero Camp – Spacious tents, all of which are capable of being doubles, twin or triple rooms. One family tent can also accommodate two adults and four children. Each tent has a view over the Talek River and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and safari showers. A solar powered inverter lights the tents and the exterior of the tents are lit up by kerosene lanterns (D) 

Days 2, 3
You will have two full days to enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in the National Park as well as relaxing evenings back at camp watching the animals along the river in front of the camp.

The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem supports the most diverse migration of grazing mammals in the world and the Masai Mara is crucial in sustaining this mass migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles and is a highlight of your wildlife holiday in Kenya. Its rich grasslands are able to support these vast herds of migrating animals from Tanzania during critical points in the dry season. Their arrival spells a bonanza for the Mara’s big cats and it is no wonder that BBC film crews have based themselves here for several years filming their Big Cat Diaries.

The rolling grasslands of the Mara Reserve are dominated by the red oat grass that form an endless sea of waving long grass dotted with solitary Balanites, the Desert Date Tree. There are also picturesque areas of savannah woodland dominated by numerous acacia species which are a favourite haunt of the Masai giraffe. The Mara’s famed rivers are lined by lush riverine forest areas and are home to numerous pods of hippos. The grassland plains are the stomping grounds for the migrating wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle as well as Grant’s gazelle, topi, eland, impala and large herds of buffalo. The cats are never far away from the plains game and lion and cheetah are mostly seen on the rolling savannah plains of the Mara reserve and Masai community lands, whilst leopard prefer the riverine forests along the Mara and Talek rivers making for an exciting wildlife safari.

For much of the year the Mara Reserve itself is dominated by the longer grasslands which attract the migrating herds from Tanzania and this area is at its best for wildlife viewing at the peak of the migration.
Overnight: Rekero Camp (B/L/D)

Day 4
Today you will be met at Rekero Camp and transferred to Acacia House in the Mara North Conservancy. This private house is located in a secluded valley in the Mara North Conservancy and overlooks the Rekero waterhole. This is a fantastic location and great for children. There is a pool near the house which is great for entertaining the kids between game drives.
Overnight: Acacia House – Acacia House comprises of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, one of which is en-suite, open plan dining and sitting area as well as a swimming pool which overlooks the waterhole. There is a great BBQ area near the pool; perfect for relaxing during the evening. The swimming pool is shared with nearby Mara House (B/L/D)

Days 5, 6
You will have two full days to explore this wonderful part of the Mara North Conservancy on private game drives with your own private guide. Because you are staying in one of the Conservancies, night drives and walking safaris are available (age restrictions apply, please ask for details). Night drives are a great way to explore the bush as this is when the predators come to life and head out to hunt. The bush is completely different at night and to see and hear the change is fascinating. Walking safaris are also a great way to see the bush as you can spend far more time looking at the smaller aspects of the bush and will see things you would normally miss in a vehicle.

The Mara North Conservancy is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas within the Masai Mara Ecosystem. Throughout the year great numbers of herbivores such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles and impalas seek the area for water and grazing and the big cat predators are never far away! Huge hippos and large crocodiles can be found lazing around in the waters of the Mara River. The Conservancy is also home to the world famous Leopard Gorge! Five prides of lions, seven cheetah and at least six leopards has made the conservancy their homeland making your chances of spotting them very likely!
Overnight: Acacia House (B/L/D)

Day 7
After an early lunch you will be transferred by road to Ngerende Airstrip for your flight to Diani (departing Ngerende at 1400hrs and arriving in Diani at 1600hrs).  Upon arrival you will be met and transferred by road and boat to Funzi Keys. On arrival at Funzi Keys you will be able to relax after the last week’s safari.

Overnight: The Funzi Keys - Individually designed beach front cottages (two family cottages). All the beach front cottages benefit from four poster beds and jacuzzi baths with spectacular views over the sea with adjoining kids room. All cottages come with fans, safes and all the beach accessories you could need. In front of each cottage you will have your own private seating area where you will be able to watch the sun set over the sea (B/L/D)

Days 8, 9, 10, 11
You will all have four full days to relax at this beautiful seafront location. Take the time to relax on the beach, laze by the huge pool, or treat yourself to a relaxing massage. Alternatively, if you’re feeling a little more energetic, you may feel like sailing, windsurfing or canoeing (all available at a small fee). If you feel like more wildlife spotting, there is a fantastic river cruise in the mangroves where you can see kingfishers, crocodiles and even dolphins! Alternatively, if you enjoy diving and snorkelling, there is an excellent marine park not too far from the island. Funzi, all though luxurious, has a very relaxed feel and is excellent for children. It is a family run lodge and so there is a very good understanding of what family holidays are all about. Flexible meal times and itineraries mean you can enjoy your day without feeling pressured to be at a certain place by a certain time and because Funzi is a private island there will only be you and the other guests staying here!!
Overnight: The Funzi Keys (B/L/D)

Day 12
Check out time is 1000hrs. You will be met at The Funzi Keys and transferred Diani Airstrip for your flight to Nairobi (departing Diani at 1600hrs and arriving in Nairobi at 1720hrs). On arrival into Nairobi you will be taken to a local restaurant for dinner (payable direct to the restaurant). Following dinner you will be met and transferred to the International Airport for your flight home. (B)
