Brazil Family Holidays & Safaris
A selection of tailormade family safaris and holidays to Brazil...
Despite thousands of miles of sandy coast, the beach isn’t all that Brazil is good for (although a definite perk!); with stunning natural diversity, exotic wildlife and a huge range of unforgettable landscapes and culture, it is perfect
for adventurous families looking for that perfect family break...
Quite a flight from the UK, once you arrive the infrastructure is great and massively needed to travel such a large country. The locals are warm and welcoming and although Portuguese is the main language, English is widely spoken. Due to its sheer size, Brazil is a year round destination, depending on what you want to see and do, so can be travelled in any school holiday, summer or winter.
Rio de Janeiro may no longer be the country's capital, but it offers so much to the open traveller. A large urban sprawl it may look, but once you get under the skin there are some unlikely attractions for such a large city, giving it a less claustrophobic feel than you may get from other cities of that magnitude. The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema for one give a sense of freedom, and the breathtaking views from Sugarloaf Mountain as the sunsets behind the Christ the Redeemer Statue are unforgettable.
Once you get out of the larger cities, places such as Salvador are fantastic to really get a sense of where you are. The vibrant cobbled streets and multicoloured facades provide a stark contrast to Rio de Janeiro and the boutique hotels a welcome source of relaxation.
The Emerald Valleys of Chapada Diamantina National Park are a hiker’s paradise and for those who are after the wildlife, there is of course, the Amazon. Accessed via the large city of Manaus via road or canoe, there are places not too far which provide a great experience, yet without too much travel - Monkeys, sloths and toucans galore, as well as the opportunity to meet an Amazonian tribe and learn about their ways of life. The Amazon can be explored via a rivercruise, eliminating any boring drives and travel time, and meeting the pink dolphins is a must for those with children. The Pantanal Wetlands, perhaps lesser known than the Amazon, are a fantastic way of spotting wildlife with vast open spaces giving them few places to hide. Swamps, mangroves, forests and rivers attract creepy caiman, giant river otters and even the elusive jaguar, whilst toucans, parakeets and ibis swoop above you. Throughout the Pantanal, accommodation is mainly in Eco-Lodges, such as the Pousada do Rio Mutum. Here you can stay in cottage-like apartments, surrounded by wildlife. Monkeys and birds will keep you amused with their calls and there is a fantastic range of activities, such as canoeing through the wetlands, jeep safaris and motor boats. You will have the opportunity to visit a local fishing village or head out at night with a spotlight to see the nocturnal life of the area and even ride horseback through the wetlands... Lots of these lodges, including the aforementioned, have swimming pools to keep the children entertained.
Iguassu Falls is another natural feat ready to enchant any visitor, young or old; the masses of water that plummet over the edges is just beautiful, emphasised by your wild jungle surroundings. We would recommend you stay in Hotel das Cataratas for somewhere child-friendly, and it also gives you access to the falls before they are officially open for the day, and after they have closed.
