Abu Camp, Okavango Delta

Abu Camp

This camp has a great history of being the first base camp when Africa’s first elephant-back safaris commenced in the Okavango Delta 17 years ago. The camp lies next to a tranquil lagoon in an area of pristine wilderness, surrounded by open grasslands, island sanctuaries and papyrus- fringed channels. In addition to game drives and water-based safaris, viewing wildlife from elephant-back safaris offers a unique way to experience the Okavango Delta.

  • 5 luxury tents
  • Plunge pool
  • Children over 8 years welcome
  • Great for elephant-back safaris

Style: A luxury tented camp. Abu Camp is part of the Wilderness Safaris collection.

Setting: Lying next to a tranquil lagoon within a 400 acre private reserve and magnificent hardwood forest, Abu Camp is a gem in the heart of the Okavango Delta.

Accommodation & facilities: Accommodation is in unique ‘Afro Bedouin’ canvas tents, which blend seamlessly with their surroundings. The spacious tents include unique fittings, antique furnishings and en-suite bathrooms. Each tent has its own private, elevated teak deck sculpted around a sycamore fig or jackalberry tree, with awe-inspiring views of the Okavango Delta.

Facilities include a well-stocked bar, where guests can enjoy post-safari sundowners sipped around the campfire. The comfortable lounge and dining areas are linked by well-lit paths and there is a library, containing an absorbing collection of field guides and illustrated volumes about Okavango Delta wildlife. A secluded plunge pool enables guests to cool off and relax in the hot afternoon sun.

Dining: Meals at Abu Camp are often taken alfresco on the deck.

Activities: The focus at Abu Camp is on elephant-back safaris with the Camp's resident herd. Morning and afternoon game drives and night drives are also offered, as are guided nature walks. Mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions can be taken, when water levels are sufficiently high.

Child policy: Children over 8 years old are welcome – a private vehicle may be required.
